National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Kolkata is an approved institute from the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climatic change, Government of India for Research for Education purpose on Small Animal.
The Central Animal Facility (CAF) is a one storied building with “Two-way corridor system” for efficient animal house operation and reducing cross-contamination. Air shower is present at the entrance to remove particle contaminants. There are total four designated rooms for quarantine, rodent caging rooms and experimental studies. Quarantine area is connected with a Dynamic pass box with UV and blower for entry and exit of animal cages. Continuous video camera surveillance of the entire CAF is ensured throughout 24 hrs. The facility is equipped with IVC of capacity 96 cages for housing mice of different strains and dedicated animal cage change station. The animals are supplied after permission from Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC). The animals are well conserved under controlled environmental conditions. The experimental room is equipped with MRBP system, tail flick apparatus, rodent ventilator, and inhalation anaesthesia system.
Daily cleaning and disinfection of animal rooms, quarantine area, corridors and other areas are carried out. Personal hygiene and sanitation are taken utmost care of. Regular cleaning and sterilization of animal supplies like water bottles, cages and bedding are performed. Intermittent health monitoring of animals is carried out. Horizontal heavy-duty autoclave is installed for sterilization purpose and inspected regularly for its proper functioning. Full time veterinary care is provided for proper nurturing of animals. Biomedical waste disposal is carried out according to the guidelines.
